Datura metel is a member of the solanaceae family, and close relative of a number of other similar species. D. metel is known for its beautiful double and triple trumpet flowers. The purple variety used here is D. metel fastuosa.

In India, datura is sacred to Shiva, who is among other things a god of poison. Datura flowers are left at his shrines and his followers the Aghoris consume the plant for its ethnobotanical properties.
